New PlastiFix Professional Kit Now Available

Our new PlastiFix kit, introduced at the end of 2000, has been well received by our customers. The only complaint has been “it’s too small!”

To rectify that situation, we are proud to announce the availability of our new PlastiFix Professional Size Rigid Plastic Repair Kit. The Professional Kit includes two 150g bottles of powder, both black and white, and a 230 ml bottle of PlastiFix liquid.

The black powder is exclusive to the Professional Kit and is perfect for creating virtually invisible repairs to black plastics. The kit also includes three reusable FlexMold molding bars, which can be molded together when heated to create a larger molding bar.

Most importantly, the kit includes a short instructional video tape that shows a complete repair. The PlastiFix is very unique in its application method, so the videotape makes it much easier to understand the process.

Go to www.PlastiFix.com for more information on the product and how it’s applied. At the site there are photo repair sequences that show the entire repair process from beginning to end. We also have a couple of downloadable video clips showing the application process.

At $97.95, the Professional Kit is an outstanding value, as it has 10 times more powder and about five times more liquid than the smaller 2501 PlastiFix kit, which sells for $32.95. See your distributor for more information on this new product, or call us direct.

Celebrate Urethane Supply Company’s 20th Anniversary with a T-shirt!
Some of the most momentous events in the 20th century occurred in 1981 -- Ronald Reagan took office and was shot, our hostages came back from Iran, and Urethane Supply Company was born in Rainsville, Alabama!

It’s hard to believe we’ve been providing plastic repair products to the collision repair industry for 20 years! Just as plastic bumper covers were beginning to emerge on new cars, we were there providing repair solutions for the autobody technician.

New Insta-Weld Kit Offers MORE Glue for LESS Money!

How often in life do you get MORE for LESS? Well, this is one of those very rare occasions. The tried-and-true 2100-1 Small Insta-Weld kit has been repackaged with MORE glue for LESS money! Instead of the older 1/2 ounces of thin and thick glue, the new kit comes with 1 ounce bottles, giving you twice as much. Furthermore, we reduced the suggested User price from $39.95 to $34.95. Is this a great country or what?

In order to refresh your memory on some of the things you can do with the Insta-Weld kit, check out the following technical information. Insta-Weld works great on all rigid, non-olefin plastics. You can use it to tack parts together while you perform a weld or adhesive repair. You can also use it to repair metal, wood, glass, or ceramic parts. The best thing about Insta-Weld is that, like its name says, it works instantly.

Alternate Body Materials Gaining Momentum with OEMs.

From the tried and true SMC to new technologies such as rotational molded polyethylene, automakers are continuing to introduce plastic body panels in new production vehicles.

The new Chevy Avalanche will feature an all-SMC bed, rear gate, and “midgate” which converts the truck from an SUV to a pickup. It will join Ford’s Explorer Sport-Trac which also features an all-plastic box.
The Avalanche also has a three-piece thermoset urethane cargo cover and composite side cargo box.

Car“The hear and soul of this truck is the midgate,” says Terry Woychowski, chief engineer for full-size trucks at GM. The composite box weighs about 250 pounds, about 30-40 percent less than a steel box. “We couldn’t have created this concept without plastics’ durability and light weight” Mr. Woychowski added.

Automakers are continuing to explore new materials to reduce weight and lower manufacturing costs. One example is the new Th!nk City car, built in Norway. Th!nk, now a subsidiary of Ford, has a hood and all vertical body panels rotationally molded from polyethylene, and the roof is molded from ABS. The car is designed for the European market, where gas prices range from $3 to $4 per gallon. Ford is considering distributing the cars in the US as well, but some work would have to be done for the car to comply with US safety standards.

The flat black body panels, similar in appearance to a garbage can, will take some getting used to, but other technologies offer excellent surface finishes. Chrysler is experimenting with thermoformable Acrylic/ABS sheets that pop from the mold with a Class A surface finish. Aristech Acrylics, one vendor of such sheets, advertises: “To eliminate orange peel on painted surfaces, first you have to eliminate the paint.”

Tech TipsRepairing Stripped Threads with PlastiFix

DrillStep 1 - Drill or file out the stripped threads in the hole. Use a drill bit slightly larger than the size of the screw. The screw should be slightly loose in the hole. Blow dust from hole with compressed air if necessary.
ThreadsStep 2 - Apply some oil or WD-40 to the screw threads. This creates a “mold release” that prevents the PlastiFix from sticking to the threads.
Apply PlastiFixStep 3 - Apply PlastiFix powder and liquid mixture liberally onto the screw threads.
Insert BoltStep 4 - While the PlastiFix powder and liquid mixture is still wet, insert the screw into the hole. Wipe off any excess PlastiFix that’s mushroomed out. Allow to cure for 2 hours, then unthread the screw to reveal your newly cast threads.
