The temperature and pressure from the radiator will cause adhesives to come off of plastic radiator tanks. The only way to get a permanent repair on plastic radiator tanks is to use a plastic welder.
Plastic radiator tanks must be able to withstand high temperatures and pressures. Nylon has a very high melting point and is used on every radiator tank that we have ever tested. To give the tank enough strength to withstand the pressure, glass fibers are added to the nylon. Now that you have an understanding of radiator tanks, you need to know how to repair them. Here is how it's done...
Getting good penetratrion is very important when welding nylon radiator tanks. For that reason, you need to v-groove the crack. In this photo, we are using a V-grooving tool. If you don't have a V-grooving tool, use the tip of the welder to melt in a v-groove.
NOTE: You may hear some crackling sounds when you do this. The crackling sound is from the glass fibers, and is normal for this repair procedure.
Nylon is a very high melting-point plastic. If you preheat the area with a heat gun, the repair will go much quicker. Keep the heat on the area until you see the plastic start to look glossy. Wait a minute or two and allow the heat to "soak in", then reheat it again. When you feel comfortable that the plastic is heated all the way through, you can go to the next step.
Using the nylon welding rod with the airless plastic welder, lay down about 1 inch of melted rod. Remove the rod from the welder and work the melted rod into the plastic. You will know when you have good mix, because the rod will take on the color of the radiator. Keep mixing the melted rod with the melted base material until it is well mixed.
NOTE: Only weld about an inch at a time to prevent the plastic from cooling off before you have a chance to work it in.
Smooth it out with the tip of the welder.
